Wide-Format Plotter Questions

What is a plotter?

A plotter is a large format printing machine. Essentially it is a big printer. Typically printing 24 inches or wider, these machines are still referred to as plotters in the architectural, engineering, and construction industries. The name derives from the original pen plotters that mechanically moved a pen or other device across the face of a piece of paper to draw lines.

What are small plotters?

A: Small plotters are wide-format printers that print a maximum width of twenty-four inches. Conversely, thirty-six inches is a more common size of plotter printer for producing D-size and E-size drawings. Plotters are also available in much larger configurations as well.

What is a printer for blueprints?

Almost any large format printer can be used for blueprints. However, classic blueprints are no longer produced. Instead, construction plans are printed with black and/or colored lines on white paper. Typically, construction related companies will use a dedicate CAD plotter or similar general-purpose printer for the task of printing blueprints. Common printer sizes are usually 36-inches, 42-inches, or 44-inches wide.
