Anyone associated to the construction industry is aware that Building Information management (BIM) software solutions are more commonplace than ever - and with good reason. Over the past few years, the AEC (architecture, engineering, and construction) market has experienced a massive transformation and BIM has been a huge driver of change. 


BIM is not really a software, but more of a digital workflow powered by software. It is an intelligent process that optimizes the whole life cycle of a project. This includes all aspects from design, to construction, and can also model ongoing operations and maintenance. 




BIM software collects data and models a real-world representation of buildings and infrastructure before they are constructed. The modeling can even show models of the project during construction, and after completion.

BIM is Needed for Continued Construction Growth

The construction industry certainly felt the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic. Strict lockdowns led to a decline in projects. However, despite the challenges presented by COVID 19 and related economic constraints, the global construction market is still expected to grow by 85% by 2030.


Much of this projected growth is related to some large and complex giant tunnel projects like the Marmaray Tunnel - Turkey and the Gotthard Base Tunnel – Switzerland. Projects like these require incredible design efficiency and accuracy. In essence, they are perfect for BIM.


According to an ASC Technology Solutions report, the current size of the BIM market is $5.2 Billion and is estimated to grow to $15.06 Billion by the year 2027. That shows that the entire BIM market is growing at a rate of 14.3% CAGR in a seven-year window. 


BIM Standards

Large global projects have led to even more greater needs of collaboration among project partners. Since this alliance can easily transcend national borders, it is important that all parties adhere to the same standards.


OpenBIM is a collaborative process that is a vendor-neutral collaborative process that extends the benefits of BIM in the built asset industry. The OpenBIM concept is promoted by the nonprofit Building Smart International – an organization dedicated to delivering improvement by the creation and adoption of open, international standards, and solutions for infrastructure and buildings.
